Hello 2012!

2011 has been a rollercoaster of a year! While 2010 was probably the best year of my life to date, 2011 has had it's ups and downs. For me personally, the end of 2011 has been stressful and I for one am certainly ready to embrace a new year and can only hope it is filled with love, laughter, happiness and good health for me and all my loved ones. I am hoping 2012 brings nothing but joy :)

I've been thinking for quite some time about what goals and wishes to make for myself in light of a new year beginning. I never take these too seriously, but I do like to set some goals. I feel, like most people, that the beginning of a new year brings the perfect starting point for new dreams. So here goes my list for 2012...

  • Complete all of my FCPS Coaching Courses. To be a fully certified coach in Fairfax County, there are various courses offered by the county that must be completed within the first year of a coach's contract. I have a couple of first aid courses to complete by the summer, so I am hoping to be productive this spring and get those taken care of so I can coach volleyball for my second season next fall.
  • Drink More Water! This may seem silly, but I truly do not drink enough water. 8 glasses a day? I'm lucky if I drink 2. I have already started this goal at work by taking in one of those fabulous plastic Starbucks cups and filling it each morning. This at least makes me drink 2 glasses while at work. While at home? I'll have to figure out a trick for that too...
  • Workout more consistently. Over the past 2 years, my weight hasn't changed AT ALL, regardless of diets or eating differently or working out. My new goal is to not focus so much on my "weight", but on adhering to a more consistent workout routine in the gym. While coaching volleyball this past fall, I got fairly inconsistent with my running. I am hoping to get back into the flow of things and get my butt back in gear!
  • Improve my correspondences. One of my goals for the new year is to keep better track of family & friend's birthdays, anniversaries, events etc. I hope to do a better job of sending cards and keeping my correspondences up to date.
  • Heather Time. I spent A LOT of 2011 focused on other people. Between my students, my volleyball team, all of the weddings and showers and bachelorettes etc. I attended there was very little time for me. I am hoping that this less-wedding-filled year will bring me a little more downtime and a few more free weekends. It seemed like from May-December that EVERY weekend was booked. I hope in 2012 I can carve out some more quality "heather time" for me to choose & spend however I want :)
Wishing you all a fantastic end to 2011 and a wonderful welcome to 2012! Happy New Year!

Merry (belated) Christmas!

This holiday season has been a whirlwind of shopping, baking, toasting, stressing, wrapping, celebrating & enjoying the company of family & friends. As always, I was overly spoiled with wonderful gifts from Santa and have not put them down (or away!) since. Andy and I were lucky to have our first Christmas celebration of the year with my parents on the 23rd with a delicious dinner & fabulous gifts. The morning of the 24th, we headed to Altoona, PA for our annual Christmas Eve festivities at my grandma's house with my aunts, uncles, and cousins and all their families. It was a short visit but we enjoyed our trip up north. On Christmas Day we drove back down to VA to celebrate with Andy's family. We opened some gifts with his grandma and mom and then headed to Hamilton for Christmas dinner with Andy's sisters and their families. Our nieces and nephews (wow, that is still weird to say our!) were definitely in the holiday spirit and had a great time showing off their new toys! Jason, Andy's brother-in-law, made a fabulous Christmas dinner and we enjoyed the delicious meal and family time. We returned home just in time to wrap up the day with a good old fashioned viewing of The Grinch on tv :)

This Christmas in particular, I spent a lot of time thinking of the things in life that truly matter to me. It isn't the gifts I get, or the football games, or even the extra calories that matter. It's spending time with the people I love most in this world. I am so lucky to have so many wonderful people in my life and I'd trade all my gifts for more time with all of them. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and are looking towards the new year with new dreams, wishes, and hopes! Merry Christmas!

ACCCG in Charlotte, NC

As promised, I am delivering my update to my 4 weekends of football fun. Last weekend, my best friends and I traveled to Charlotte, NC for the annual ACC Championship Game. We made the 6-hour drive south for the second year in a row to cheer on our Hokies in person. Cara, a friend I met through my best friend Lindsay, is a Charlotte Hokie and currently resides right outside the city. When we tailgated with Cara at the UVA game the weekend prior, Cara was so generous to offer her home to us for our stay. We headed down Friday after work and headed right out to the downtown area. Charlotte has a great spot called the EpiCentre where we had also hung out last year. We spent the night reppin; our orange and maroon and hanging out with friends.

We got up early Saturday morning, showered, and prepared for an entire day of tailgating! The 8pm kick-off allowed us to head to the stadium lot around 1pm and hang out. Luckily for us, the weather was BEAUTIFUL this year! Last year, it was hailing and freezing cold. This year? Sunny and in the high 60's! Perfect tailgating weather! Cara's family put together a fabulous tailgate and we spent the day leading Hokie cheers and having fun with Hokie friends :)

Unfortunately, the result of this game against Clemson was much too similar to the first result earlier in the season, with the Hokies on the losing end. But I could not have been more proud to make the trip and support my Hokies. We still had a great time despite the loss, and came home Sunday to a GREAT surprise!

Despite our loss in the ACCCG, Virginia Tech was invited to play in the BCS Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on January 3rd! I could not be more proud that my Hokies were rewarded for their 11-win season with such a great game and I'm excited to have the opportunity to represent our school and the ACC in a great bowl!

So now the question is, is there a Sugar Bowl trip to New Orleans in my future?! Stay tuned to find out.... :)

4 Weeks of Football Fun

Here's a look into how I have been spending all of my "free time" since volleyball season has ended. I'm sure you will all be shocked to see how I've spent my weekends off (cue the immense amount of sarcasm)...

November 11th-13th: State College, PA
My parents have season tickets to Penn State football games each season. One of my good high school friends, RJ, is dating a girl who actually attended Penn State as an undergraduate student and has been dying to get RJ to a Penn State football game and to visit Happy Valley for years. During the summer, we looked at our football calendars and decided to use my parents set of 4 tickets to go to the Penn State-Nebraska game (little did we know that it would be quite an interesting weekend to go!) Despite the frenzy, me, Andy, Justine and RJ had a great time at the game, visiting my aunt and uncle at their tailgate, and showing RJ around town.

November 20th: Landover, MD
Every year, Andy and I look forward to attending the Dallas Cowboys-Redskins game in Landover. It's usually the only Cowboys game we can go to each season so we really enjoy going to tailgate with friends, put on our blue and silver, especially when we get a big win! This year was no different as we enjoyed friends and another W in the win column :)

November 26th: Charlottesville, VA
My highschool/Hokie friends headed down south to C'Ville for the annual VT-UVA game. The game this year mattered much more than it has in years past. The winner earned the bid to play Clemson in the ACC Championship Game. Needless to say, I was a bit nervous. We found a great obscure parking spot to tailgate for a little on an unseasonably warm November morning. As always, I enjoyed kicking back with friends, chatting about football, and looking forward to a great game. And a great game it was... for the Hokies! We won 38-0, not even enough time for me to (in typical Heather fashion) get nervous and spazzy! It was fun from kick-off to final whistle with lots of cheering and celebrating in-between. With the win, we set the date for our VT-Clemson rematch. Uh ohhhhhh.... Saulitis Family Rivalry Part Deux!

SNEAK PEEK: December 2nd-4th: Charlotte, NC
Yes, I am proud to announce that for the second straight year, I will be making the trek to Charlotte, NC for the ACCCG! Stay tuned for updates from my 4th week of football fun :)

We Are... Penn State

I begin this post with a very heavy heart. And I should include the disclaimer that I am reflecting on my feelings very early on in this "investigation". These are my feelings as of right now. They are subject to change, particularly in the light that new information is being reported hourly. But I can't help but express how truly sad I am at this particular moment in time.

All of you that know me are very well aware of the deep bloodlines that my family and I have to Penn State. It has been a part of me since before I was even born. I truly believe that I bleed a combination of blue & white, orange & maroon. In fact, I was a diehard Penn State fan before I even knew what a Hokie was thanks to my parents who are proud and loud Penn State alumni. My aunt and uncle also attended Penn State, and my entire extended family considers themselves Nittany Lions fans as they all hail from the small town of Altoona, located a mere 45 minutes from State College, PA.

My first memories of my childhood include watching Penn State football games on TV. I remember inviting the neighborhood kids over and enjoying the full-scale "tailgate" of food my mom put together for each game. Saturday afternoons were for wearing blue & white, cheering at the top of our lungs, eating 'til our tummies ached, and running around outside having marshmallow fights at halftime. And people wonder why I am such a diehard, dedicated, and loyal sports fan?!

I remember traveling to Happy Valley, enjoying the delicious ice cream from the infamous campus creamery,  taking in the cool, crisp autumn weather in Central PA, tailgating with family and feeling a sense of unity and togetherness I found intoxicating (this is why I HAD to attend a university with an established and fervent sports program).

But one of the things I remember most about growing up a Penn State fan is Joe Paterno. I recall the guy in the big glasses with the rolled up pant legs and navy blue sweaters leading his team out on the field. I remember seeing him on TV, watching him in person on the sidelines, listening to my parents praise him for not only his coaching abilities, but for his character and integrity as a human being. His passion for the game, for his players, and for the local community and student body at large was, and is in my opinion, unwavering, whether he be yelling at a pep rally to pump up the crowd, or donating millions of dollars to support education. Whether people like it or not, Joe Paterno is a living legend. And he is a man who, in my opinion, is the epitome of what college football coaches should be.

For these reasons (and certainly not these reasons alone, as I am of course first and foremost in sorrow for the innocent children and families allegedly affected by this tragedy. I just simply refuse to discuss the facts of a case currently under investigation due to the fact that we truly don't know what happened and I for one will not discuss someone's guilt or innocence prior to their due justice in a court of law) I am sad. I am angry. The media has, for at least the 2nd time in my recent memory, driven me to truly despise them. (I also felt this way in regards to the media in 2007 during the tragedy at Virginia Tech where they seeked scapegoats and placed blame on who/what I felt were innocent targets).

In my deepest heart of hearts, and in the midst of a world where almost no one can be trusted or admired, I believe in Joe Paterno. Based on the man I have seen him be over the 27 years of my life, the stories my parents have passed down to me, the genuine gestures he has made to his MANY teams of athletes, to perfect strangers, to an entire university and to the world, I believe in him. I've always considered him to be the prime example of what a college coach should be, and I could not be more proud to say that Frank Beamer, the coach of my beloved Virginia Tech Hokies, can be compared to a man of JoePa's status.

I whole-heartedly believe that Joe Paterno did exactly what he thought were the appropriate measures and steps to take given whatever information he received regarding this incident. For over 60 years, the man has not ONCE wavered in his strength of character or responsibility, and I for one truly do not believe he would ever allow such a tragic thing to continue if he had truly known the facts. I understand people are angry and hurt and are looking for someone to blame, but Joe Paterno is not and should  not be that person. In my opinion, he is being used as a scapegoat when there are so many other people truly at question. If for some reason information is revealed that proves me wrong, I will me utterly heartbroken. Truly, truly devastated. But deep down in my soul, I have the faith that Joe Paterno did not mislead the world for 84 years.

I will go to State College, PA this weekend. I will walk into Beaver Stadium on Saturday morning. I will wear blue in honor of supporting the fight against child abuse. I will cheer on the football team and hope they beat Nebraska to continue a great season. But above all else, I will stand up in that stadium in support of Joe Paterno, whether he stands along the sidelines with HIS team or not. It crushes my heart to know his legacy will end this way and will forever be remembered in this light. Joe Paterno deserves more than that. He is the greatest football coach in college football history, and I will continue to support him as a football fan, an American citizen, and a Nittany Lion at heart.

I <3 You JoePa, Always & Forever!

Happy Halloween!

Halloween is by far my favorite holiday. I looooove the adorable kids in costumes and the delicious candy treats! I love the black and orange decorations, little ghosts and goblins, bats and black cats. I've always loved Halloween, probably thanks to my mom who always hosted my childhood Halloween parties and decorated our Haunted House :) Think homemade costumes and bobbing for apples with best friends...

This year, Andy and I headed to a party in Arlington at a bar where a friend had rented out a private room. I have been incredibly busy over the last few months and had NO time to costume shop let alone think of original ideas! So, I put Andy in charge. HA!

I should have known immediately that we were in trouble :) Andy picked out Snow White and a Dwarf for our costumes this year and to his credit, they both turned out pretty cute. We had a great night hanging with friends and unwinding from yet another long week :)

Already looking forward to next year- and I already have those costumes planned!!! But it'll be a secret until next year :) Happy Halloween!

My Best Friend's Wedding

Over this long Columbus Day weekend, I was lucky enough to celebrate one of my favorite couples as they officially became Mr. & Mrs. Jenny was the very first friend I made at Virginia Tech. We met on the first day of classes, at our very first class. We clicked right away and were best friends ever since. We lived together for 3 years in Blacksburg and became like sisters (although she already has 2 awesome sisters!) To this day, we continue to refer to each other as soulmates because of our chance meeting at our very first college class, and the similarities between the two of us.

On Thursday, I headed up to North Beach, Maryland. We had lunch with some of Jenny's family members and other bridal party members and then lounged at the Inn at Herrington on the Bay before the rehearsal festivities that evening. The weather was absolutely gorgeous. We practiced the ceremony and then headed to a tented area for crabs and BBQ. It was a great way to kick-off Jenny's wedding!

Friday morning, the girls woke up early and headed into town to get our hair done, which was quite an experience in and of itself! We have many stories from that trip to the hair salon :) After our appointments, we headed back to the Inn to hang with the bride in her suite as she got ready. It was a pretty low-key, relaxed morning of wedding prep. Around 3pm, we got in the limo and headed to the ceremony site for Jenny & Kirk's first reveal. We took lots of pre-ceremony pictures and then got ready for the big show!

Jenny was a beautiful bride and the fall weather was absolutely perfect for a wedding on the water. I couldn't have picked a better husband for Jenny... he is the perfect match for her, as she is for him. I am so excited to officially call them the Friedman's! Congratulations Jenny & Kirk, and thank you for letting me be a part of your big day!

Virginia Tech vs Clemson

Nothing like a little family rivalry. My beloved Hokies and Andy's beloved Tigers met in Blacksburg last weekend so we took a little road trip down south to watch the game. This is the 3rd time we have played each other since Andy and I have been together. Virginia Tech won the first two match-ups. Unfortunately for me, the Tigers finally took one from us this time around.

We headed down to Blacksburg Friday after work and got to head downtown and visit with friends for a little bit. Saturday morning we started our tailgate at 10am. The weather was a mix of sun and clouds, but it was COLD! We were lucky enough to meet up with a lot of my Hokie friends and even some of Andy's Clemson friends and tailgate altogether. We had a blast hanging out before the game. I was sad that my Hokies did not give us a great game that evening, but the weekend was still a great time for all of us and it was nice to get back down to Blacksburg for some fabulous fall football! Go Hokies!

10 Year Anniversary of September 11th

10 years ago, I was a senior at Annandale High School. It was a morning like any other for the beginning of a new school year. The sun was shining, not a cloud was in the sky. I was headed to my athletic training class and heard the word spread in the hallways that something had happened to one of the twin towers in New York. As soon as I got into class, our teacher turned the TV on CNN and we watched to see what was happening. It was a morning of confusion, fear, sadness, anger, and helplessness. I vividly recall watching the 2nd plane hit the second tower live. We all wondered, was that a replay of the first? What was happening? There can't have been another plane that accidentally flew into a building. Later the reports came in about the plane crashing into the Pentagon, and the plane crashing in Pennsylvania. The word 'terrorism' reigned through the halls. No school work got done that day. We were all glued to the TV screens in every classroom. My fellow students were comforting each other, hugging in hallways, supporting friends trying to reach their parents via phone who worked in the Pentagon. After school, a bunch of my neighborhood friends came over to my parents house. We wanted to do something. But what can you do at a time so desperate? We decided we would all go together to donate blood, but when we arrived, they turned us away, saying they had an influx and to come back another time. So we decided to drive past the Pentagon that night. I will never forget the images of the black charred building, the smoke still lingering in the air, and the eerie quiet that permeated Washington D.C.  I remember it like it was yesterday.

I was one of the lucky ones. I didn't personally know anyone lost on that tragic day. But that didn't stop me from crying, or missing them, or feeling pain and anguish. Even today. I have spent much of today brought to tears. I woke up this morning and re-watched the coverage from that September morning 10 years ago. I've seen countless commercial dedications, and tributes at sports events. I have been moved to tears for those families who were torn apart that day. The hardest part for me is how unfathomable it is for people in this world to have so much hatred that they could prepare, initiate and carry out such a despicable plan. And how those people sleep at night.

My wish for the future is that every child will get to live in a world where acts of terror and hatred do not exist. I think of my kindergarten students who were not even born on 9/11/2001. They are so blissfully unaware of how horrific that day was and is for so many Americans. I can only pray that those brave soldiers, firefighters, police officers, and all of the people who choose, everyday, to stand up and protect our country and our freedom, are successful. My gratitude for the people who defend this country can never be put into words. Tonight, I think especially of the innocent lives lost that day, the families who will forever be affected, the brave men and women who worked to save lives and sacrificed their own safety in the process, and the solders who fight each and everyday to keep our great nation safe. God Bless America.

New Addiction

A few weeks ago, I began to notice friends and co-workers posting and discussing this thing called "pinterest". Of course I was curious, so I joined to see what all the fuss was about. What a mistake!

Pinterest is a networking site where you can build your own virtual pinboards. I've only been a member for about a week and I have 5 pinboards already! Addicted.

Pinterest is such a simple concept- I wish I had thought of it! During my wedding planning days, I used to google images of floral arrangements, table settings, dresses, color schemes... the works! Back in those "old days", I simply saved the images I liked to a folder on my computer's desktop. When I was decorating my house a few years ago, I would save images to another folder for decor inspiration. Well, pinterest is just another way of saving your favorite inspirational images! I totally could have invented this! :)

I am definitely enjoying finding pictures of fall decor, classroom crafts, home style, and yummy foods! I have gotten some great ideas and am definitely a huge fan of pinterest! Join so I can see what images YOU find inspiring! :)

Jenny's Bachelorette

Last weekend, I got to celebrate one of my best friends from Virginia Tech's bachelorette party! The original plan was to head to Ocean City for the weekend and party with the beautiful bride-to-be, but Hurricane Isabel changed that plan. Instead, we relocated to downtown Washington D.C. We checked into the Dupont Hotel for the weekend and enjoyed some delicious meals out, some fabulous cocktails, and some great quality time with new and old friends :)
